Google Search Is Being Told to Play Fair. Your SEO Still Needs Receipts

Google AI search rankings are under the microscope in the UK, which sounds very official and faintly headache-inducing. The useful bit? The Competition and Markets Authority has told Google to make search ranking fairer and more transparent, including where AI Overviews are involved.

Lovely. About time. Small businesses have been building their visibility on rented land for years, then waking up to traffic dips, mystery ranking changes and AI answers that summarise half the internet before anyone clicks anything. Not exactly relaxing with a cup of tea.

But before anyone gets carried away, this is not a magic wand. Regulation may make Google explain itself a little better. It will not fix a thin website, vague service pages, weak reviews, messy tracking or content that sounds like it was assembled by a committee of beige folders.

What Actually Happened?

On 17 June 2026, the UK CMA introduced new conduct requirements for Google Search. In plain English, Google has to use fairer, more objective criteria when ranking organic results, including AI-generated search results such as AI Overviews. It also has to be more transparent about significant changes and give businesses clearer ways to raise concerns when search changes cause damage.

This followed another CMA move earlier in June, which gave publishers more control over how their content is used in Google’s AI search features. That matters because AI search is changing the bargain. Websites create the useful content, search engines summarise it, users get quicker answers and the original site may get fewer clicks. Delightful, if you enjoy doing the work and watching someone else collect the applause.

For small businesses, the headline is simple: Google is being pushed to be clearer, but AI search is not going away. Your job is to make your business easier to understand, easier to trust and easier to choose.

Fairer Google AI Search Rankings Do Not Mean Easier Rankings

Some business owners will hear “fairer rankings” and think, brilliant, finally we can stop doing SEO properly. Absolutely not. Fair does not mean generous. It means the game should be less murky, not that everyone gets a trophy and a page one listing.

AI search still needs signals. It still needs evidence. It still needs structured information that helps it decide who you are, what you do, where you do it and why anyone should believe you. If your website has one service page called “Solutions”, three old testimonials and a contact form that may or may not work, AI is not going to gaze at it lovingly and infer your genius.

The businesses that win in AI search will be the ones that document their expertise clearly. They will answer real customer questions. They will keep their Google Business Profile tidy. They will collect reviews. They will connect their ads, CRM, email follow-up and website analytics so they can see what actually creates revenue.

Stop Writing for Keywords Like It Is 2014

Classic SEO used to reward a certain flavour of content. Take a keyword, sprinkle it everywhere, add a suspiciously cheerful stock photo and call it strategy. That was never brilliant, but AI search makes it even weaker.

Google’s AI features are built to answer questions. That means your content needs to be useful enough to be cited, summarised or trusted as part of a wider answer. The keyword still matters, but the context matters more.

Instead of asking, “How many times can we say local accountant Bristol?”, ask better questions. What does a customer need to understand before they enquire? What mistakes do they make before they come to you? What should they compare? What pricing, process, timing or risk questions are they too polite to ask on a call?

That is the content AI search can work with. It is also the content humans actually read. Convenient, that.

Your Website Needs Receipts

If Google is being asked to rank results more fairly and transparently, your business still needs to provide the raw material. Think of your website as your evidence file.

  • Clear service pages for each thing you actually sell
  • Location pages where geography genuinely matters
  • Case studies with the problem, action and result
  • Reviews and testimonials that mention specific outcomes
  • Helpful FAQs written like real people speak
  • Author information where expertise matters
  • Fresh content that reflects what customers are asking now

None of this is glamorous. Neither is bookkeeping, but try running a business without it. Search visibility is becoming more evidence-led, and the businesses with tidy evidence will have a better time than the ones waving a vague homepage at the algorithm and hoping for sympathy.

Your Google Business Profile Is Part of the Same Story

For local businesses, Google Business Profile is not a side quest. It is one of the clearest sources of business information Google has. Opening hours, services, categories, photos, reviews, responses and updates all help shape what customers see before they ever land on your website.

If your profile is half-finished, out of date or review-starved, fix that before commissioning another “brand awareness” post about how passionate you are. Passion is lovely. Accurate opening hours are lovelier.

AI search is increasingly stitched together from multiple sources. Your website, profile, reviews, directory listings, social presence and content all contribute to the picture. If those sources contradict each other, you create doubt. Doubt is not a conversion strategy.

Track Leads, Not Just Traffic

One awkward truth about AI search is that traffic may become less predictable. Some searches will still send clicks. Some will produce answers directly on the results page. Some customers will research across Google, social media, AI tools, reviews and your website before they ever fill in a form.

If your only success metric is website traffic, you are going to spend a lot of time frowning at graphs. Track the things that matter. Calls. Forms. Bookings. Email sign-ups. Quote requests. Repeat enquiries. Sales pipeline movement. Actual revenue, not vanity confetti.

This is where a proper CRM becomes painfully useful. With Automagical, small businesses can connect enquiries, follow-ups, campaigns and customer journeys in one place. That means you are not guessing whether search, ads, email or social did the heavy lifting. You can see the path from first touch to booked call.

What Small Businesses Should Do This Week

You do not need to rebuild your entire marketing strategy by Friday. Tempting, if you enjoy chaos. Start with a sensible audit.

  1. Search for your main services and location. Note where you appear, who appears above you and what Google’s AI results mention.
  2. Check your top service pages. Make sure each page explains who the service is for, what problem it solves, what happens next and why you are credible.
  3. Update your Google Business Profile. Services, categories, images, opening hours and review replies should all be current.
  4. Write down the ten questions customers ask before buying. Turn the best ones into FAQs, blog posts or service page sections.
  5. Check tracking. If a lead comes in tomorrow, can you tell where it came from and what happened next?

Do that and you will already be ahead of many businesses still treating SEO like a dark art performed by someone in a hoodie muttering about backlinks.

The Real Lesson: Own More of the Journey

The CMA’s action is important. More transparency from Google is good for businesses, publishers and customers. But small businesses should not build their entire future on the hope that one platform behaves nicely forever. That is not a strategy. That is a wish with Wi-Fi.

Use Google well, absolutely. Optimise for AI search, keep your evidence strong and make your business easy to recommend. Then back it up with email marketing, CRM follow-up, social proof, retargeting, reviews and sensible reporting.

Because the businesses that grow in 2026 will not be the ones chasing every algorithm twitch. They will be the ones building a marketing system that captures attention, earns trust and follows up properly.

If your search visibility, CRM and follow-up currently live in separate little boxes of doom, Precise Impact can help you pull the pieces together. Automagical was built for exactly this kind of thing: smarter marketing, clearer tracking and fewer manual jobs quietly eating your week.
