Google Marketing Live 2026 Happened. Here Is What Small Businesses Actually Got.

Last Wednesday, Google held its 13th annual Google Marketing Live event at its Bay View campus in Mountain View. For two hours, a parade of Google executives explained what Gemini is about to do to your ad campaigns. Some of it was genuinely useful. Some of it was Google telling you to trust the machine more. And some of it was the kind of announcement that sounds impressive until you realise it applies to budgets most small businesses do not have.

We watched it so you did not have to. Here is what actually matters if you run Google Ads, rely on search traffic, or just want to understand where this is all heading.

The Scale of What Google Is Building

Before the product announcements, Google’s Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler set the scene with some numbers. Google spent around 31 billion dollars on capital expenditure in 2022. This year, it is on track to spend between 180 and 190 billion. That is roughly six times as much. He described this as the reason Google can claim an end-to-end advantage, from the chips that run its models to the ad platforms that serve your campaigns.

AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries that now appear above standard search results, has 2.5 billion monthly active users. AI Mode, Google’s fully conversational search experience, has passed one billion monthly users, with searches running on average three times longer than traditional queries. The search box itself has had its biggest redesign in 25 years, built to accept longer, more conversational input.

Why does this matter to you? Because where people search is where ads appear. If a billion people are using AI Mode, and those searches are three times longer and more specific, your ads need to show up in that conversation, not just in the list of ten blue links below it.

Your Ads Are About to Look Very Different

The most significant announcement for anyone running Google Ads was the new generation of formats built specifically for AI Mode and conversational search. Google’s VP of Ads, Vidhya Srinivasan, summed up the direction in one line: “The best ads must be answers.”

That is not just a slogan. It describes a structural change. Instead of placing your existing ad copy inside AI Mode, Google will now generate ad responses dynamically, pulling from your website and assets to answer the specific question a user has just asked. The formats announced include:

  • Conversational Discovery Ads that read as part of the AI conversation, not as a separate ad unit
  • AI-Powered Shopping Ads with Gemini-written product summaries tailored to each query
  • Direct Offers, which surface exclusive discounts at the exact moment a user is ready to buy
  • Business Agent for Leads, a format where a prospective customer can ask a question directly inside the ad and get an answer drawn from your website content

The Business Agent for Leads format is currently being tested in education, automotive, and real estate. If it rolls out more broadly, it has real potential for service businesses. Imagine a user searching for a local accountant and being able to ask your ad whether you handle self-assessments for contractors, right there in the search results.

There is a catch. These formats only work well if your website content is thorough, accurate, and up to date. Gemini is pulling from what you have published. Thin pages and vague service descriptions will produce thin, vague ads.

Ask Advisor: One Dashboard to Rule Them All

Google announced Ask Advisor, a new AI assistant that connects Google Ads, Analytics, Merchant Center, and Google Marketing Platform into a single interface. Think of it as a Gemini-powered analyst that can pull data from all four platforms at once, surface recommendations, and help you build campaigns without jumping between tabs.

For small businesses, this could be genuinely time-saving. Currently, diagnosing a drop in conversions might mean checking Ads for cost-per-click changes, Analytics for landing page bounce rates, and Merchant Center for feed errors, all separately. Ask Advisor is designed to surface that kind of cross-platform insight in a single query.

It is worth being clear: this is not a replacement for understanding your numbers. It is a faster way to surface them. If you do not know what a good conversion rate looks like for your industry, Ask Advisor telling you your rate has dropped 12% is only half useful.

Asset Studio: Generating Your Creative With AI

Google’s Asset Studio, the tool for creating ad creative inside Google Ads, has been upgraded with full Gemini Omni integration. You can now generate images, video assets, and text variations using natural language prompts. There is also a new 1-Click Creative Testing feature that automatically tests asset variations and reports back on what performs best.

This is a useful development for businesses that struggle with creative production. Not everyone has a designer on hand. Being able to type a brief and get a usable image for a display ad is a meaningful time-saver.

The caution here is brand consistency. AI-generated creative can look polished and still feel completely off-brand. Use Asset Studio as a starting point, not a final product, and make sure someone with an eye for your brand reviews what it produces before it goes live.

Shopping and Commerce: Google Wants to Own the Checkout

A significant chunk of the keynote was dedicated to commerce. Google expanded its Universal Commerce Protocol, which is essentially a standardised infrastructure allowing retailers to connect their inventory, checkout, and payment systems directly into Google’s surfaces. Universal Cart now supports AI-assisted checkout flows, with buy-now-pay-later integrations from Klarna and Affirm, cross-retailer shopping experiences, and integrations into YouTube Shopping and Demand Gen campaigns.

For e-commerce businesses, this is worth paying attention to. Google is building a checkout experience that lives inside its own platforms, which means users can go from discovering a product in AI Mode to completing a purchase without ever landing on your website. That is both an opportunity and a risk. The opportunity: frictionless checkout could increase conversions. The risk: you lose visibility on the customer journey and potentially on the customer relationship.

For service businesses, this section is largely background noise for now. Keep an eye on it, but it is not your priority today.

What This Actually Means for Your Marketing Budget

Here is the honest summary of Google Marketing Live 2026: Google is automating more of the execution layer and asking you to trust it. The question is not whether to embrace AI in your Google Ads strategy. That ship sailed. The question is how much oversight you maintain as automation takes over more decisions.

Three things small businesses should act on now:

  1. Audit your website content. With AI generating ad responses directly from your pages, thin content is now a direct drag on ad performance, not just an SEO issue.
  2. Set up conversion tracking properly. Google’s new measurement tools, including its Meridian modelling framework now integrating with Analytics 360, are only useful if you are feeding them accurate conversion data. First-party data matters more than ever.
  3. Test Performance Max with tighter asset inputs. The new AI Brief feature lets you give Google more specific brand guardrails. Use it. Campaigns with better input produce better output.

The businesses that will benefit most from these changes are not the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones with the clearest picture of what they want the AI to do, and the discipline to check whether it is doing it.
